Quick update (and slight change of plans)

So I have many drafts of posts, and was all geared up to work on them last week. However, last Monday I had a notice slipped under my door. It was addressed to all residents of my building and the two buildings next to it, and it was from management. They required all items to be removed from exterior "fire escapes" (the quotes are mine since, as I've often mentioned, there is no escaping to be done from my balcony) at the end of one week.

I've lived here for five years and have never seen such a notice :( Rotten timing on starting a balcony garden! So I sent out a facebook alert trying to give away my plants and had a labmate and a fellow student graciously offer to take several. I ended up throwing away my pea plants (they were looking yellow and the two heat waves had dried a lot of their leaves) - I did manage to get about half a dozen pods off them. I ate the peas raw and they were quite tasty :) The cherry tomato plant was producing like mad and starting to die anyway, so I kept it. The heirloom and patio tomatoes as well as my container of herbs went to my fellow student while the strawberries and a bell pepper plant went to my coworker. I managed to keep a bell pepper plant and some rosemary, thyme, and oregano that have moved to my front window, where I'm hoping they will get enough afternoon sun to thrive. I still had the strawberries that I had bought to replace my first set of failed plants in the death container. Since they had actually started to grow, I thought they deserved another chance. So they are also now in a (rather small) pot in my window. We'll see how they all go!

I will continue to write about how these plants grow, but I may have to post more recipes and baked goods to make up for the lack of greenery.

I promise to have pictures next time, and I do apologize to those of you who may have thought the blog (and garden) was abandoned.

PS - I just noticed that I've had over 1000 page views since I started! How awesome! Hellooooo universe.
